no theatre required

Appropri8 make theatre that engages with the city, telling stories related to place, occupying sites and taking audiences on a journey through them.

Manifesto For a Theatre Without Walls

Our premise is that theatre can exist everywhere - in hidden, abandoned and forgotten spaces and that taken out of its formal setting, theatre can potentially reach new audiences.

Our theatre will take happen on disused urban sites and be open to all

The empty space will be the stage

The stage will be wherever the action is

We need no proscenium arches

The city can be our Skene

Artistic Director Sarah is an actor and architect with a passion for film and theatre and place making. She trained as an architect at the Architectural Association and as an actor on the MA at Drama Centre, Central St Martins.  The Drama Centre’s method utilizes aspects of Laban’s theory to develop character and the MA includes a Moscow based residency to study the movement based, Vakhtangov method. Sarah still incorporates this in her practice today using it to inform dialogues around how we relate to space and cities.

Appropri8's inaugural piece 'Urban Histories' was first performed with fellow graduates of Drama Centre, Central St Martins. Since then Appropri8 has gone on to collaborate with Actors, Spoken word Artists, directors and writers, such as Kay Ashead and Ita O’ Brien, from our base in Hackney and the wider London Theatre and film community, for projects including The Window at Residence Cafe Gallery e5, The Cine Theatre, Art Licks Festival and The London Festival of Architecture.

We were gearing up for a summer evening of performance, spoken word and movies as part of LFA.

We're now planning to take this online, which we hope will allow up to connect with even more people...around the world.

Callout for ‘The Power of Sharing’

As part of that we’re launching a callout for material which responds to the themes raised by the pandemic’and in particular the idea of social connection.

‘The Power of Sharing’ is our headline.

We are looking for material in the following forms:

1-2 minute monologues/dualogue films (what can you create across distance?)

1-2 Stories which arise out of this time

1-5 minute microfilms

1-2 minute dance/moment filmed pieces

So create it and share it with us and we will share a selection in our up and coming online festival.

Other than the stories, the content need not directly reference COVID or the pandemic, it can just be a response to the themes which arise out of it.

-Max Length 1 minute

-Camera Pho submissions are fine, in fact we encourage you to get creative with your phones!

-Phone Cameras, shoot in Landscape please.

-Watch lots of material by others for inspiration

-Light it well (creatively, if you can, but well)

Appropri8 2020 Callout - Power!

We love this year’s LFA callout theme, POWER and as we gear up for our next Appropri8 Pavilion, we’ve decided to take this theme on board as it chimes so well with some of the things we’ve looked at in the past.  We are taking a two-pronged approach; looking at the 2 aspects of power, the social and the scientific.

.Still012.png

Part 1 – The Social

In response year’s LFA theme of POWER we are looking at the power dynamics involved in the making of our cities and the spaces we live in, and the policies that govern it.

We are co-hosting an evening of film and spoken word performances, to consider where the power lies in the city making process.  Who has POWER? Who is excluded? We aim to amplify marginalised voices, those who may not consider that have access to the systems that make our cities.

We’ll present some classic stories about power, such as the Antigone story, transposed to a London, set in the not too distant future, as part our spoken word and performance evening.

Our backdrop will be ‘set’ of objects made at a workshop hosted by or partner RARA and Women In Architecture UK.

Still011 Overlay.jpg

We’re are seeking spoken word pieces, monologues and duologues which also look at the theme of POWER.

Part 2 – The Scientific

Power = Light. To compliment the performance,  we will be creating a stage/installation which plays with light.  Power is required to create light, but can we create light with the absence of power? What games can we play with light when we have it?...Did someone say Cinema?   Don’t have it?...Did I hear shadows and puppets?...Let’s see where this takes us.

Bags of Help…

We are delighted to announce, is that we were  awarded £1000 from the Tesco Bags of Help fund.  This is a fabulous initiative which sees all the 5ps gathered from plastic bag sales go toward local charities.  We are particularly pleased because the award is voted for by local customers, so a big thank you to Tesco Hackney and its’ customers.

The Professor of Shoes

The Professor Of Shoes

The man I am dubbing 'The Professor' is one of the most experienced shoe repair men I have ever met and proprietor of one the oldest surviving shoe repair shops in North-East London, which is situated on one of London's oldest terraces. He has been repairing shoes for years from this spot for 35 years and I have become increasingly curious about how this shop survives while Stoke Newington gentrifies around it. I was privileged to discover his story as I interviewed and photographed him for #hackneystories at  .

His story could be from the present day, he arrived aged 10, accompanied by his parents and siblings, fleeing war and hoping to start a new life. His father soon set up the business he now runs and like many others they became part of the rich texture of our city. Taking over from his father in the late 70s. Trained by his father a shoemaker, he has a passion for giving new life to shoes and is possibly one of the most experienced shoe repair men you will find in this part of town and his shop sits in own of the city's oldest terraces.

A Love for Food, Culture and London Life @Bernsteins

Adam Bernstein has a love of food and London's history which are palpable within minutes of striking up a conversation with him. He has always loved to cook and his passion for traditional Jewish and London foods lead to the creation of Bernsteins Bar. We talked about Old Jewish London and the rag trade, the link between food and culture, the richness that waves of immigration have brought to London life, the pros and cons of gentrification and the tragedy of Brexit...On Monday I will be interviewing Adam's business partner Ben about the Antipodean side to the business...one of my favourite things in the world...Coffee!

Remy2.jpg

European and Proud... @L' Epicerie 56

Remy is emphatically European, he ‘belongs to Europe’ and exudes an enthusiasm for London and Hackney that is infectious. His father a French Algerian moved to France in the fifties, prior to the country gaining it’s independence. There he met Remy’s French mother. From the age of thirty, Remy has travelled the world as part of his work, settling in Hackney in the mid noughties and, ten years ago, he set up L' Epicerie 56 to sell high quality food on Chatsworth Road. Entering the shop one is met by a rich array of produce, much of it is organic and fair trade, and of course it feels very European; shelves are stacked with wine, hand made cakes and chocolate fill the counter, cheese, sits behind and along with bread from a London based, French baker brings a subtle aroma of France to the shop. What does he love about Europe? It’s values, democracy, the sense of openness, the acts of leaders like Angela Merkel who welcomed migrants to Germany at a time of crisis. Yes, he is ‘proud to be European’ and feels that London is a city that suits him better than anywhere he has lived. He loves it’s diversity; the fact that you can sit in a pub and speak to people from Poland, Turkey, Australia…anywhere, and that his neighbours, though English, have Irish roots. It is ‘pleasant and challenging’ to learn to understand people from other places. And France, at the moment ? He is upset that thirty percent of France voted for Le Penn but is relieved that the tide of populism has, for now, been kept at bay. And so back to Hackney, living here since the mid 2000s means that he has seen the area gentrify, he is philosophical about this, it is sad to see old neighbours and patrons of his shop move away, something of the area’s texture is lost, like the guy who was ‘part of the folklore’ of his street, who used to fix old cars outside his house, he retired to Jamaica, taking the opportunity to sell his home, he is lost to the area; it is particularly sad if people are forced to move. Then there are long standing businesses such as coffee shop Copper and Wolf, squeezed out by rising rents, but Remy is also happy to welcome new neighbours, who come and make new lives, businesses and creating jobs here. So, ultimately, he is optimistic about the future here in this vibrant part of East London...next up Michele and Maria.

LFA (Digital) 2020 - The Power Of Sharing - With - WomeN In Architecture UK

BC:AC Before Corona : After Corona. Life will never be quite the same.

The current period is unprecedented in most of our living memories.

It's effect on society will be profound and perhaps long lasting. Appropri8 & Women In Architecture are collaborating to collect and share stories of this time and create a digital repository for our memories.

At the end of June, as part of LFA (digital) 2020, we join forces to host The Power of Sharing. Two evenings of discussion around personal memories collected during lockdown, followed by Appropri8’s presentation of a series of creative responses to the crisis - video and audio stories collected to share in this initial online performance and then maintain as a digital archive of material about this time.

About Appropri8

During lockdown the company has been exploring ways of making and sharing performance in the virtual realm.

For LFA 2020 we are exploring the themes raised by life in lockdown: vulnerability, isolation, family, community and hope.
